Instructions on proper aftercare following eyelid surgery for faster healing and a beautiful result.

Although eyelid surgery is a minor procedure performed on the outer skin, the skin around the eyes is very delicate and sensitive. Post-operative care at home plays an extremely important role, determining up to 50% of the healing speed and the natural, balanced appearance of the eyelid crease afterward.

Clean the wound and control swelling.

After eyelid surgery, there will be slight swelling and bruising in the first few days. This is a completely natural reaction of the body and can be easily managed if the procedure is done correctly.

  • Keep the wound dry: For the first 2-3 days, absolutely avoid direct contact of tap water with the eye area. Clean the surgical wound daily by using a clean cotton swab soaked in physiological saline solution (0.9% NaCl) to gently wipe away toxins and eye discharge.

  • Cold compresses and warm compresses:

    • During the first 48 hours: Apply cold compresses 3-4 times a day to reduce swelling. Use a specialized ice pack or wrap ice in a dry towel, avoiding direct contact of the ice with the incision.

    • From day 3 onwards: Switch to warm compresses using a clean towel or a peeled boiled egg to stimulate blood circulation and help bruises around the eyes disappear faster.

A balanced lifestyle and eye protection

To ensure the new eyelid crease settles quickly and doesn’t become deformed, clients need to pay attention to their daily habits.

  • Give your eyes a rest: Minimize continuous exposure to phone, computer, or television screens during the first week to avoid eye strain, dry eyes, or watery eyes.

  • Avoid physical contact: Absolutely do not rub your eyes with your hands, do not massage, rub, or scratch the eyelid area. Do not apply eye makeup (mascara, eyeliner, false eyelashes) until the wound has completely healed and the stitches have been removed.

  • Protect your eyes when going outside: When going out, it is essential to wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from sunlight, dust, and environmental pollution.

  • Sleeping position: It is recommended to sleep on your back, using a high pillow to reduce fluid pressure on the face. Avoid sleeping on your side, as this can cause one eyelid to rub against the other or swell unevenly.

Healthy diet and follow-up appointments

Nutrition directly affects the skin healing process and reduces the risk of unsightly scarring around the eyelids.

  • Foods to avoid: To prevent the risk of keloid scarring, dark scars, pus formation, or itching, you should avoid foods such as water spinach, beef, seafood, sticky rice, and chicken for the first 2-4 weeks. Absolutely avoid alcohol, beer, cigarettes, and stimulants.

  • Foods to include in your diet: Increase your water intake and consume foods rich in Vitamins A and C (oranges, grapefruits, carrots, papayas) and green vegetables to promote the regeneration of new skin.

  • Follow medical instructions: Use antibiotics, painkillers, and anti-inflammatory medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Attend follow-up appointments and have stitches removed as scheduled (usually 5-7 days after surgery).
